paneer kheer

Birthday is a day when you feel like God in the whole family. Right when the calendars were changed at the start of the year I used to see when was my grand day falling. To my disappointment it always fell on a holiday . My birthday always coincided with Guru Nanak jayanti mostly. So I was deprived of celebrating my birthday in school. I was also happy that a great saint was also born that day though I am nothing in front of him. For one day  I felt like a mini God in our house. No one was allowed to scold me or hit me. I was boss of the house for a day.
Anyways celebrations were carried forward to other day so that my friends could also be a part of it.
My birthday was celebrated in a simple way. I carried toffees and distributed to the whole class and all the teachers.
At home Cakes were a strict NO . But my mother made all my favourite dishes in dinner and we enjoyed it thoroughly. One dish which I always liked is "Khees" . It is actually the boiled and cooked milk which is obtained from the cow after its delivery. It was my favourite right from my childhood . My mother made it a point to cook it in another way . She made paneer ki kheer and it tasted the same as khees. She made it on my birthdays keeping it less sweet as I never liked eating sweets. Everyone in my house enjoyed eating kheer and halva but I was always served unsweetened kheer and always kept away from sweets.
My mother would do my arati followed by tilak and a shagun (which I gave back to her) and she always fed me a spoon of this kheer .  Now I do the same to my kid.
